Buying a Wi-Fi router might not sound like most people’s idea of fun. Similar to buying a new toaster, you may have to replace it every couple of years or when you move to a new residence. Fun fact that you might not know: you’re actually unboxing an opportunity to showcase your personality and humour that can rival any novelty t-shirt or bumper sticker. People scrolling through Twitter or Reddit looking for suggestions to name their Wi-Fi network are greeted by a community of users competing to show off their Wi-Fi wit. Together with some amazingly corny Wi-Fi memes, these names form a niche but often hilarious internet subculture.

Showcasing Personal Interests

Wi-Fi names have grown into an art form thanks to their easy sharability on social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit, especially among people who enjoy corny internet-related puns. Others take it one step further by creating names dedicated to a particular fandom or names that are meant to play good-natured pranks on neighbours who are within range of their Wi-Fi network. Whether it’s a name or a memorable phrase, it’s not hard to think of a name that can make you and your neighbours chuckle giving new meaning to the word “one-liner”.

Here are some of our favourites:

  • Drop it like it’s Hotspot
  • Keep it on the Download
  • Abraham Linksys
  • Bill Wi the Science Fi
  • Dora the Internet Explorer
  • Martin Router King
  • Wham Bam Thank You Lan
  • Winternet is Coming
  • You Load Nothing, Jon Snow
  • You Shall Not Password
  • Accio Internet
  • Dunder MiffLAN
  • Luke, I am your Wi-Fi
  • I Believe Wi Can Fi
  • Silence of the LAN
  • Byte Me
  • Modem Family
  • Benjamin FrankLAN
  • Ludwig WAN Beethoven
  • Wi-fi Art Thou Romeo
  • Wi-Fry Chicken
  • Password is Gullible

If you and your neighbours share the same excitement, it is possible to collectively team up on a project that takes a little more effort. In this example, everyone is committed to the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song (except for one guy who didn’t get the memo):

Passive Aggressive Communication

Modern condominium buildings have people living in very close quarters with their neighbours even though may not see or interact with each other in person. But people can definitely see their neighbours’ Wi-Fi networks when they connect devices in their own unit. This has created a fun and thoroughly modern dynamic where people use their Wi-Fi name to send messages ranging from mildly passive-aggressive to fully offensive. While they may cause some uncomfortable elevator rides the next morning, they’re definitely hilarious to look at from a safe distance!
